Because SBS 2008 is a global catalog server, when Exchange 2007 installed on a GC, some services like: Microsoft Exchange System Attendant, Microsoft Exchange Information Store may not start automatically, which is normal.

The cause of the issue is that Exchange services depend on following Windows Services:

Event Log
NT LM Security Support Provider
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
Workstation

When any of these service do not start before Exchange tries to start Exchange services, the Exchange Information Store service cannot be started. You can either change the service dependencies, or you can add BootPause registry key to delay the startup of Exchange Server. Microsoft provides instructions to perform these steps in the following knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940845/en-us.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694918717050735941.post-17820664288980016152010-02-03T10:14:00.003-05:002010-02-05T11:44:25.246-05:00Free Virtualization Event: Virtualization Untangled - March 18th, 2010
RoseBud Presents - Virtualization Untangled - Join us for this free event - Earn CPE Credit

<span style="Calibri","sans-serif"font-family:";font-size:12.0pt;">March 18th, 2010 11:30-1:00p.m.. A separate Windows 2008 R2 server is acting as the virtual machine management console.

We took turns, one by one, putting the virtual host machines into Maintenance Mode. This automatically moves any virtual machines on that particular host another host in the cluster. This move is “live”, so end users don’t know anything is happening while the move takes place or that the server their using is now running from a different virtual host machine.

While the machine is in maintenance mode, we installed Windows Updates and rebooted. Once the reboot was complete, we stopped maintenance mode on the virtual host machine. System Center Virtual Machine Manager then reallocates the virtual machines running on the other virtual hosts back to the reinstated virtual host.

Sometimes technology is just cool.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694918717050735941.post-25959072585032152872010-01-22T11:17:00.003-05:002010-01-22T11:32:02.357-05:00Establish a VPN connection pre-logon in Vista/Server 2008/Windows 7

Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

Windows displays the logon screen for the user that last logged on. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800B0100)”

This was not a happy thing to find as the virtual host in question is a production server with virtual machines running. The last thing I wanted to do in the middle of the day was to reboot this server.

As the error message suggests, I looked in an area of the Server 2008 Event Logs that I’ve never been before. This event log gets noted as “Microsoft-Windows-ServerManager/Operational”. The error event ID I had in this log was 1601.

A little BING-ing and I happened upon the following article - http://dwjack.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3EE7D7517C0BC5AE!250.entry. This provides a great run down of the steps involved to resolve this issue. To my surprise, the result of this did NOT require a reboot of the server to implement the changes.

However, I found that the documentation here was a little thin in just the right place. Part of the solution for this “no signature” error is to copy the missing files from a Windows Update into the C:\windows\servicing\Packages directory. The way to do that is to take ownership of the Packages folder and add yourself with full control. However, the initial owner of the folder is TrustedInstaller.

Microsoft Starting with Windows Vista and Server 2008 Windows incorporates Mandatory Integrity Control, which adds Integrity Levels (IL) to processes running in a login session. MIC restricts the access permissions of applications that are running under the same user account and which may be less trustworthy. Five integrity levels are defined: Low, Medium, High, System, and Trusted Installer.
From WikiPedia

When I went back to add TrustedInstaller as the owner, I was not able to find the account. Turns out that the account is an NT SERVICE. I followed the steps in this article to restore ownership to correct account, http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/159360-trustedinstaller-restore-owner.html. We virtualized this platform on two “big” servers and have a great experience so far operating our business in this way. However, as many businesses grow, we found ourselves a little short on space to continue testing and integrating new Microsoft products.

To overcome this, we purchased additional RAM and a Storage Area Network (SAN). In this post, I plan to cover the conceptual idea we have for “expanding the virtual” as expanding something that’s virtual sounds like it should be pretty straight forward.

The idea in expanding this environment goes like this.

Upgrade the RAM in the main virtual host servers
Configure the SAN to house the data for the virtual servers
Move the virtual hard drive files from the host servers to the SAN
Reconnect the virtual machines with their data through the host servers

So far, we’ve installed the RAM in the host servers and are adding the SAN to our network and configuring it. More details to come as progress through this project.

From a business perspective, this expansion has some important implications on how we operate. We will be able to test new products and upgrades by creating a mirror image of our production environment, installing the new software, and test. If we need to add a dedicated server for some purpose, we’ll be able to add it as needed in the virtual environment without having to purchase new server hardware. We will extend our use of Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager to virtualize the remaining physical servers in our production environment, to monitor the virtual environment for issues, and to create a true test platform – all without additional hardware or software.

The SAN and the additional RAM moves the virtual “ceiling” for scalability much higher and gives us some room to breath.

More to come on this topic as we continue to have more clients introduce virtual technologies in their environments and as we expand our infrastructure.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694918717050735941.post-17163609561387459432009-12-03T10:11:00.003-05:002009-12-10T14:28:11.849-05:00SharePoint 2010 - Anywhere Access and Customizations:

Anywhere Access

Mobile work isn’t just for the sales force anymore. SharePoint 2010 offers a diverse set of capabilities that extends people’s access to resources and allows them to be productive regardless of the tools or devices they have available.
Customize

In times when business volatility is on the rise and time-to-market is key, SharePoint 2010 enables all users (end users, power users, designers, and professional developers), to customize the out-of-box platform and deploy solutions that will enable them to address specific business needs more quickly and more effectively. SharePoint 2010 includes tools and capabilities that allow businesses to maximize the impact of existing investments and knowledge, and to provide all users with bi-directional interaction with line-of-business data. These tools and capabilities make it possible to shorten the time between recognizing a business need and delivering a business productivity solution to address it.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694918717050735941.post-1865397906810492092009-11-24T10:13:00.003-05:002009-11-24T10:18:12.888-05:00RoseBud Technologies Winter Event: Cooperation and Insight - December 10th, 2009

Join us as we discuss how a better understanding of Business Intelligence can improve your relationship with your clients.

All attendees are entered for a chance to win a Kindle - all attendees receive CPE Credit hours.

Our goal is to make you as knowledgeable as we can via a short seminar that will arm you with the information you need to face the challenging questions your clients will pose.

According to a recent Aberdeen study, Business Intelligence (BI) is the number one technology that will impact business over the next 2-5 years. While spam and malware are always searching for victims, this time of year and the social climate we’re in lend themselves to a more volatile Internet environment.

Recently, we’ve seen more virus activity at our clients with current and industry standard antivirus solutions including third party antispam filtering. In short, these environments have several layers of security built-in, both on premise and remote. Still, viruses have weaseled their way onto these PCs and have caused much frustration.

Specifically, we’ve seen variations of the MS Antivirus malware infection AKA “scareware”. This type of infection claims to remove virus infections on the host PC. However, these infections are bogus and only made to look like the real deal. If you’re convinced that what you’re seeing on your screen is real, then you’ll click the screen pop up that entices you to download a program to deal with these virus, albeit entirely bogus.

What makes this worse is the fact that if you’re not convinced, you’ll pay the price in other ways. From Wikipedia, “This deceptive tactic is an attempt to scare the Internet user into clicking on the link or button to purchase MS Antivirus. If the user decides not to purchase the program, then they will constantly receive pop-ups stating that the program has found infections and that they should register it in order to fix them. This type of behavior can cause a computer to operate slower than normal.”

If you find yourself in the precarious position of having to eradicate this infection, try Malwarebytes.org. Their free tool has handled this malware very well for us and was able to restore the PC to a usable, malware free system.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
